When the ignition is on, would that mean that the Check Engine light should come on for a few seconds, or would that be after you start it?

  1. when the ignition is on i think the light should blink once then remain on for a few seconds.. after you start it it should be off.  if it is not turning on  then the bulb might be burned. not the easiset thing to replace but not impossible. you might need to take apart the instrument cluster. you might also need to take the panel out ( might need to drop the steering wheel down a lil)

  2. It should come on when the key is placed in the 'ON' position. If it does not illuminate then you most likely have a burnt bulb (as already stated by others).

To replace it, you need to remove the outer part of the dash bezel; super easy to do. Drop your steering column down, and place the trans in first (auto), then open the cup holder and grab the dash bezel and pull. It is held in place with compression snap like things. Pull and work your way toward the headlight switch.

If you have push-button 4wd, you will have to disconnect the plug for that as you remove the bezel, as well as the cargo light switch and passenger airbag switch (if you have one). Then you will have access to the gauge cluster. It is pretty much a self explanatory process from there.

  3. It should pop on when you turn it to on

Edit: If it does not come on, the bulb is burnt out/removed
