Chicago Bears GM Phil Emery reveals contact by NFL over WR Brandon Marshall's latest incident - NFL News
Chicago Bears made a direct impact in the first day of free-agency as they signed Miami Dolphins Pro-Bowl wide receiver, Brandon Marshall, after trading two third round draft picks.
However, on the weekend before the completion of the deal Marshall was involved in a fight when out with his wife and friends at a New York City nightclub.
The wide receiver has been accused by a woman of punching her in the face during the fracas leaving her with a black eye and this latest disciplinary problem has overshadowed one of the biggest coups by the Chicago Bears.
On Thursday, Bears general manager, Phil Emery, confirmed that the National Football League (NFL) contacted the franchise over this issue.
Talking to the media Emery revealed that.
"The league has contacted us. We're in contact with the league. We're working through this process with them, along with ourselves and doing our own work. We will monitor the process and follow it through to its conclusion."
It is probable that the league might hand out some punishment to Marshall following his latest disciplinary issue which comes on the back of several others that have marred the 27-year-old’s time in the NFL.
Emery though added that the Bears had done their homework on Marshall and knew about the allegations before completing the deal.
Coach, Lovie Smith, though believes that even with Marshall’s disciplinary problems they are happy for signing him up and expect great things from him in the future.
"I know there are allegations out there right now. You can't really go on those. All the information we had on Brandon, we felt good about what we have in place here and him being a Bear."
The explosive wide receiver has a chequered history with the law and has faced a multitude of defensive issues off the field.
However, on it Marshall has been brilliant and his three Pro-Bowl appearances are testament to his wonderful talent.
The 27-year-old was named the Pro-Bowl Most Valuable Player (MVP) this year after a wonderful performance for the American Football Conference (AFC) team.
Marshall also had a great regular season record even though the Miami Dolphins once again fell well short of reaching the playoff rounds.
The wide receiver put up 1,214 receiving yards on 81 receptions while scoring six touchdowns and that ability may have forced Chicago to overlook some of his discipline issues.
Hopefully with his friend quarterback, Jay Cutler, keeping an eye out for him, Marshall can control his behaviour and help Chicago into the playoffs in the new season.
