Chicago Bears President Ted Phillips happy with Phil Emery - NFL News
Chicago Bears President Ted Phillips looked very satisfied with his new general manager as he faced the press with Phil Emery in his introductory press conference.
Phillips laid out all his thoughts on what impressed him the most about Emery and said that his depth of vision and past experience made him standout from the rest of the candidates.
The President said.
''What stood out with Phil was the depth of his plan, [All five candidates who were interviewed] stated kind of a general vision on how to make the Bears a championship team. But he had an added depth of understanding of what it would take on every level.
That's what really stood out.”
Emery, who has just ended three years with the Kansas City Chiefs as the Director of Scouting has 14-years of experience in the National Football League (NFL). He has also previously worked as a scout for the Bears and is expected to bring a new vision to
the franchise which looked to be regressing under the regime of ex-general manager Jerry Angelo.
Phillips however said that his previous work with the Bears had no impact on the hiring process but his impressive interview tilted the balance in his favour.
''I went through a long process of talking to a lot of other head coaches, general managers, agents, personnel people and nobody had a negative thing to say about Phil Emery. So I became intrigued early on. It was the way he approached the whole process
that made him a final candidate.''
The Bears fired Jerry Angelo at the end of the 2011-12 regular season as they spectacularly collapsed in the final half of the season to lose out on their spot in the wildcard rounds.
Angelo was blamed for much of the deadweight in the roster as the Bears offence was decimated by injuries to quarterback Jay Cutler and running back Matt Forte.
The franchise also removed offensive coordinator Mike Martz and quarterbacks coach Shane Day to completely shift around the front office.
A lot is expected by Chicago fans from Emery who will make the draft pick decisions this year while he will also need to develop a great working relationship with coach Lovie Smith if the Bears want to emerge in 2012 back among the elite.
