Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler full of praise for WR Devin Hester - NFL News
Chicago Bears may have brought some big name players in the offseason to shore up the offence but it seems new offensive coordinator, Mike Tice’s systems are bringing the best out of the old guard at the franchise.
The Bears brought in three-time Pro-Bowl wide receiver, Brandon Marshall in addition to drafting Alshon Jeffery in the second round but both these new arrivals are being outshined by fan favourite, Devin Hester.
Speaking to the Chicago Tribune after practice at Halas Hall, quarterback, Jay Cutler was in no doubt that Hester was the best receiver on the field in training these days.
"Devin Hester is having the best camp of all the receivers. So we have a lot of weapons."
Cutler is himself enjoying the new playbook being developed by Tice with its much simpler plays than previous coordinator, Mike Martz’s system.
With the additions of such big names plus Hester, Chicago Bears look in good shape heading into the 2012-13 season and on paper boast one of the best receiver corps in their division.
Tice in a previous interview spoke about his plans for Hester and said that he would be used as part of his own package to take full advantage of the unique skills he brings, however, Cutler does not agree with that assessment.
The quarterback told analyst Brad Biggs.
"I don't think less plays is the answer for him. I think we're just going to put Devin in position to be successful every time he's out there. He's getting more and more comfortable with me and I think (Tice's) offense suits his abilities a lot better."
It remains to be seen how the Bears utilise Hester in the receiver role.
Hester will continue to also fulfil his role as the team’s punt returner and is likely to be used sparingly as a receiver.
Hopefully the new offensive system will let Hester express himself on the field.
The Bears are targeting the playoffs this season after last season’s disappointing end. Chicago lost five of its last six games in 2011-12 to miss out on the playoffs and ended up with a poor 8-8 record.
