Chicago Bears coach Lovie Smith calm over RB Matt Forte's contract - NFL News
It seems that Chicago Bears coach Lovie Smith is taking an overtly simplistic approach to sign running back Matt Forte on a new long term deal.
The coach in an interview to an ESPN reporter said that Forte will play for the Bears in the new season and there is nothing to worry about on the contract front.
On Sunday, Lovie Smith said.
"We love him, he's going to rush for a lot of yards for us. It's going to work out fine."
That is not the way Forte is seeing it.
The running back was livid at the news of the Bears signing running back Michael Bush in free agency and took to Twitter to blast the Bears for their lax manner of working with him on a new deal.
Forte said on his official account on Thursday.
"There's only so many times a man that has done everything he's been asked to do can be disrespected! Guess the GOOD GUYS do finish last ..."
Adding another post the running back said.
"for the record I'm not mad at the signing of another running back. This is 4th time that's happened. I embrace competition as well as help. But as for not taking care of ur own and undervaluing a player under his market value is another story! #twitterrant"
The Bears and Forte have been locked in contract negotiations since the end of the 2011-12 season with both sides appearing no closer to signing a deal.
Chicago slapped a franchise tag on Forte giving them more time to negotiate a new deal while also keeping the running back from entering free agency.
Forte had rejected an earlier contract offer after he disagreed in the Bears valuation of him and is still waiting for an offer that he believes he deserves after a brilliant 2011-12 season.
The running back covered 997 rushing yards in the outgoing season and scored three touchdowns of 203 attempts.
His season though was cut short after a knee injury that ruled him out after a week 13 defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Hopefully both parties can agree on a new deal soon and the Bears could concentrate on the new season as they look to get back to the playoff rounds.
