Chicago Bears down to final two potential candidates for GM job - NFL News
The Chicago Bears search for a new general manager is entering its final phases with two out of five potential candidates being asked to return for the next round of interviews.
The Bears on Monday have selected Phil Emery and Jason Licht as their final two candidates.
Emery is the director of college scouting at the Kansas City Chiefs and has been in that role for the past three years. The Chiefs director also has held similar positions in the past and has vast experience in player scouting.
Licht who is currently with the New England Patriots as the director of Pro Personnel has also been asked to give the final interview in the process.
The Bears had fired general manager Jerry Angelo after a poor 8-8 record in the regular season with the franchise missing out on the coveted playoff spots and finishing third in the National Football Conference (NFC) North division.
The Bears for most of the season were playing brilliantly as they ended week 11 with an impressive 7-3 record but the bad times were just around the corner.
After the victory over the San Diego Chargers in week 11, star quarterback Jay Cutler’s season was over after he picked up a thumb injury that required immediate surgery.
That one moment changed the whole dynamic of the Bears season and stand-in quarterback Caleb Hanie could not provide the passes of Cutler’s level. The Bears lost the next two games after Cutler’s injury and the situation in offence was exacerbated when running
back Matt Forte also had his season ended pre-maturely with a knee injury.
The Bears offence was decimated with the loss of both their main weapons in attack and lost a total of five games to ruin their chances of qualifying for the wildcard playoff berth.
The fans turned their ire on the management and the general manager Jerry Angelo was removed from the position. Angelo played a major role in drafting new players to the roster and with most of his backup picks not up to the required standard was sacked
by President Ted Phillips.
Angelo was not the only one to be removed with offensive coordinator Mike Martz also dismissed along with quarterbacks coach Shane Day with only head coach Lovie Smith avoiding the sack.
The Bears have in the interim made Tim Ruskell the general manager before a permanent hiring could be made. Ruskell himself is thought to be in the running for the job but his chances look bleak now that the Bears are down to the final two candidates.
