Chicago Bears draft WR Alshon Jeffery with second round pick - NFL News
The Chicago Bears drafted a defensive end in the first round with Shea McClellin joining the franchise. In the second round they turned their attention to the offence and brought in South Carolina’s wide receiver, Alshon Jeffery.
The Bears got Jeffery after trading their number 50 overall selection to the St. Louis Rams to move up to number 45 as they gave the Rams their fifth round selection.
Jeffery will provide another weapon in offence to Chicago and general manager, Phil Emery was pleased with the latest addition to the roster.
Emery talking to reporters after the draft said that he was impressed with the wide receiver’s potential.
“We saw a big, dynamic athlete, playmaker falling and we decided that we were going to go after him. We wanted to make sure we were close enough that it didn’t cost us more than a fifth-round pick.”
Adding further, Emery said.
“We felt good about the compensation, that we still had our third- and fourth-rounder to work in the draft and we went ahead and moved forward with it, and we’re very excited to have him.”
The youngster becomes the second wide receiver added by the franchise in the offseason after the Bears had earlier used the free agency to bring in Pro-Bowl wide receiver, Brandon Marshall from the Miami Dolphins.
Jeffery was asked by the Chicago press how he felt to be paired with Marshall and the youngster said.
"I look forward to being on the team with all the guys. Brandon Marshall is a great receiver. I've heard a lot about him. He's a great player. I've watched him. He's worked hard. He does all the right things."
The youngster covered 762 receiving yards in his final season for South Carolina and scored eight touchdowns from 49 receptions.
The addition of another playmaker to the offence will be good news for quarterback, Jay Cutler who now has more weapons to aim his accurate throws at.
The Bears missed out on the playoffs in the 2011-12 season after the offence crumbled in the face of season ending injuries to star players such as Cutler and running back, Matt Forte.
