Chicago Bears hire new general manager with ex-Chiefs Phil Emery joining the franchise - NFL News
Chicago Bears have announced an end to their search for a new General Manager, with the franchise selecting ex-Kansas City Chiefs' director of pro-personnel, Phil Emery for the role.
The franchise announced their selection on Saturday and will unveil him to the press on Monday.
Emery beat back competition for the role from four other candidates and will now join the front office.
Bears undertook a thorough search to hire their new general manager.
New England Patriots' Jason Licht, New York Giants' Marc Ross, and Jimmy Raye of the San Diego Chargers all interviewed for the role, but only Licht and Emery were recalled by the franchise for a second interview.
Bears also considered their interim general manager, Tim Ruskell for taking over the position permanently but now have Emery to take on the task.
The new Bears general manager will have a difficult task ahead of him as he will contend with running back, Matt Forte’s contract situation, while also deciding on the futures of players who are on the verge of free agency.
Emery cannot bring in his own head coach this year as part of his job and will have to stick with coach Leslie Frazier who retained his role for the 2012 season.
The Bears fired their previous general manager Jerry Angelo after a poor 2011-12 season while promoting director of player personnel Tim Ruskell to the position for the interim.
Chicago also removed offensive coordinator, Mike Martz, and quarterbacks' coach, Shane Day, in a bid to revamp the front office.
Angelo was blamed for much of the Bears failure at the business end of the season, as his draft choices providing backup for the star players failed to perform at the expected levels.
Bears lost five games in a row as they ended what was turning out to be a promising season on a bad note.
The Bears offence was ravaged by injuries in the second half of the regular season.
Quarterback Jay Cutler had his season ended prematurely with a thumb injury while running back Matt Forte also had his great season curtailed by a knee tear.
With Emery taking over the role, Chicago will hope that next season will be better for the franchise and they could return back among the elite of the NFL.
