Chicago Bears quarterback Todd Collins career on the line after shoulder injury
Jay Cutler was not the only quarterback to be injured during the National Football Conference Championship game at Soldier field on 23 January. Cutler injured his knee during the game and he was replaced by backup quarterback Todd
Collins.
Although Cutler’s injury was minor, Collins suffered a much more serious injury. Collins attempted just four passes in the game without being able to complete any of them. Subsequently, he was replaced by third string quarterback
Caleb Hanie, who almost led the Chicago Bears to victory over the Green Bay Packers.
Collins injured his shoulder after receiving a hit from Green Bay’s monstrous nose tackle, B.J. Raji on his final snap and might require surgery on his shoulder. He is scheduled for an MRI today to assess the extent of the injury.
Collins attempted 10 passes in the regular season and four more in the playoffs. In the 2010-11 season, he has thrown for a total of 68 yards and was intercepted on five of his 10 throws in the regular season. His quarterback ratings
stand at a league-low of 5.9 for the regular season. However, Collins was not intercepted by the Packers on Sunday.
In his 16-year long career, Collins has started just 49 games. The 39-year-old passed a total of 4,547 yards and threw 22 touchdowns against 24 interceptions during this period. He was the starting quarterback for the Buffalo Bills
in 1997. Since then he has started just four games, including one in this season.
Collins signed a one-year contract with the Chicago Bears in August 2010. After monitoring his performance during the season, it is highly unlikely for the Bears to sign him again. If he has extensive surgery performed on his shoulder,
this could very well be the end of Collin’s career.
Green Bay’s quarterback Aaron Rodgers also injured his shoulder in the game, but his injury does not seem to be of serious concern.
