Chicago Bears sign WR Brandon Marshall from Miami Dolphins - NFL News
Chicago Bears pulled up a massive shock on the first day of free agency as they landed All-Pro wide receiver, Brandon Marshall, from Miami Dolphins.
The signing of Marshall is a big statement of intent from Chicago who traded two third-round draft picks to pick up their target and the news has sent excitement in the Windy City to fever pitch.
This move is big for Marshall’s career too as the wide receiver has never reached the playoff stages and signing for a Bears team that is barring a few signings ready for the Super Bowl is a brilliant move for the player.
Marshall’s signing is the first that Chicago made under new general manager, Phil Emery, and the wide receiver will give quarterback, Jay Cutler, a potent option to pass too.
Both Cutler and Marshall have played together previously during stints with Denver Broncos and they built up a solid partnership which is set to be renewed in 2012.
The 27-year-old will be given the number 15 jersey at Chicago for the new season.
Cutler took to twitter to welcome the news.
"Told you we could get that #15 out of storage. Getting the band back together! Good to have #15 back."
The quarterback was not the only one though as Chicago players came out on twitter to celebrate the big news.
Chicago Bears endured a disappointing 2011-12 season after injuries to quarterback Jay Cutler and running back Matt Forte.
With two of their most dangerous players out for the season, Chicago went on a five game losing run with the offence failing to make big plays and replacement quarterback Caleb Hanie completely out of his depth.
The Bears ended the season 8-8 and missed out on the playoff rounds once again.
Marshall will bring a directness and big play potential at the receiver position that Chicago has sorely missed.
The 27-year-old has been named in the Pro-Bowl roster three times as he put up five consecutive 1000-yards plus seasons.
Marshall once again was brilliant in 2011-12 as he covered 1,214 yards from 81 receptions while also scoring six touchdowns.
However, like usual the wide receiver missed out on the playoffs as Miami ended the regular season with a poor 6-10 record.
