Chicago Blackhawks Captain Jonathan Toews terms latest offer 'Just a Ploy' -NHL Lockout Update
There have been few players to come out into the open and actually vent their anger at the lockout and especially the actions of their own National Hockey League (NHL) and Chicago Blackhawks’ captain, Jonathan Toews, is definitely one of them.
For Toews, the league is obviously losing image during the lockout as fans have mostly sided with the players union during the process, and for him, the latest 50-50 offer made by them is one that they do not even want to implement themselves, terming it
to be “just a ploy”.
“There’s no real effort there,” Toews said, according to ProHockeyTalk.NBCSports.com. “It’s just a ploy to kind of sway the positive light back in their favour”.
While fans are hoping that both sides will eventually reach a deal before the November deadline in order to have a full 82-game regular season, as termed by NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman, Toews is not seeing that happen anytime soon and as an act of just
getting back some positive light on themselves with no intention of actually carrying out with it.
Seeing how the Players’ Association made three alternative proposals of their own during the meeting, which lasted a little over an hour, struck them down in minutes, Toews does not see them being willing enough to get a deal done at all.
"It is still my hope that we can accomplish my goal, the League's goal of getting an 82-game season, but I am concerned based on the proposal that was made today that things are not progressing. To the contrary, I think the proposal that was made by the
Players' Association was in many ways a step backward," Gary Bettman added after their second meeting on Thursday this week.
Toews has been active in advocating for the players union ever since the previous NHL collective bargaining agreement came to an end over a month ago on September 15, but does not see the league as willing to budge even an inch from their stance, ensuring
a lockout to continue and the players to continue struggling at all costs.
Updates should be expected in the next few days.
