Chicago Blackhawks add offensive depth; sign Brandon Segal to one-year deal –NHL offseason Update
Chicago Blackhawks added defensive depth on Thursday, September 1, by signing former Dallas Stars forward, Brandon Segal, during the final days before the training camp of the National Hockey League (NHL) teams is set to begin.
The deal between the unrestricted free agent and team is supposedly a two-way conditional contract since the franchise has announced that Segal will be given an opportunity to play on the roster only if he can prove himself worth during this month’s training
camp.
According to CapGeek, the deal is estimated to be worth $525,000, which is a little lower from his previous two-year contract with Dallas Stars, which was $550,000. The amount is what he can make in the NHL and if he is sent to play in the minor leagues,
he will be paid $105,000.
Brandon Segal, a Richmond, British Columbia, Canada native, was drafted as the 102nd overall pick during round-four of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft by Nashville Predators.
The 28-year-old initially played for Calgary Hitmen in the Western Hockey League (WHL) for nearly five seasons which ultimately led him to be drafted into the major league. He continued playing in the minor leagues after his selection with Milwaukee Admirals
in the American Hockey League (AHL) along with Portland Pirates and Norfolk Admirals.
Segal was given his first chance in the NHL by playing with Tampa Bay Lightning in two matchups, in which he failed to score any points. The following season was a transition for him to Los Angeles Kings, for whom he played 25 games of the regular season
and scored two points (1 goal, 1 assist) during 2009-2010. He was traded to Dallas Stars the same year, a team with which he saw new career highs.
In the past season, Segal scored 10 points (5 goals, 5 assists) and played a record number of regular season games (46) but was kept in the minor league for nearly half of the time.
Segal is still looking to make an impact in the NHL and next season with Chicago could finally be that one opportunity a person gets in a lifetime.
