Chicago Blackhawks devour Phoenix Coyotes 5-2 -NHL Match Update
The Chicago Blackhawks did not give the Phoenix Coyotes any time to breathe during their matchup on Tuesday night, October 18, 2011, devouring them by a monumental, 5-2, at the Jobing.com Arena in Glendale, Arizona, United States.
Marian Hossa had scored the opening goal for his team and put the Blackhawks ahead, 1-0, with less than five minutes remaining in the first period on unfortunate, 5-on-3 situation for Phoenix. Adrian Aucoin and Lauri Korpikoski went out nearly a minute apart
with minor penalties, giving Chicago more than enough space to pot the goal.
The Phoenix crowd was reassured after Taylor Pyatt scored his first of the season 42 seconds into the second, but it did not last long as Blackhawks captain, Jonathan Toews, fired off three minutes later to make the tie-breaker.
Ray Whitney levelled the contests again with his third of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season, but Phoenix was again answered by Jamal Mayers to take the lead once more, ending the second period, 3-2.
Dave Bolland became the yes man for Chicago by potting a match sealing goal at the 2:27 mark when the Blackhawks lost Patrick Sharp for a minor early on, but took control of the puck for a turnaround and shot past Coyotes goalie, Jason LaBarbera, shorthanded.
"Huge”, Blackhawks head coach, Joel Quenneville, said about Bolland’s shorthanded goal in the third period. "It's still a one-goal game, they got a power play, then they got another power play. But the shorties (short-handed goals) they really can change
the momentum of the game. Getting an insurance goal at that point in the game was huge for us".
Knowing the benefits of scoring when having a man down is what Bolland took into consideration, which ultimately dropped the Phoenix morale to zero.
"It's a huge advantage when you score on the PK (penalty kill)”, Bolland said. "It gets the guys going, gets everybody going on the bench there".
Bolland setup another goal with a pass to Michael Frolik who forwarded it to an open Bryan Bickell to extend the lead nearly midway through the final period, finalising the match in favour of Chicago.
This is Chicago’s first win after losing to Boston Bruins, 3-2, in a shootout on Saturday, and will now travel to Colorado to face-off against the Avalanche on Thursday. Phoenix Coyotes play their next matchup against Los Angeles Kings the same day.
