Chicago Blackhawks rally in third to overtake St. Louis Blues 3-1 -NHL Update
St. Louis relied on their third period streak of keeping the opposition at bay but Chicago did not let that happen as the Blackhawks rallied in the third to overtake Blues, 3-1, on Sunday night, February 19, 2012, at the sold-out United Center in Chicago,
Illinois, United States.
Chicago snapped St. Louis’ two-game winning streak by extending their own to three in a row now, but the Blues still managed to hold on to the fourth number place in the Western Conference while Blackhawks sit at number six.
"Tough luck but we should have had it out of the zone before that," Blues’ David Backes said. "You don't make plays to get it and I put one in the back of our net. ... We let them hang around, hang around. I'd like to have that back. Ells played fantastic
in nets and he deserves better."
Andy McDonald scored the only St. Louis goal of the night for his third of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season as Jamie Langenbrunner fed him the puck in front of the opposing net with 24 seconds left to play in the first.
The Blues managed to keep Chicago out of their net up until the third period, after which the Blackhawks just could not hold it in any longer.
"They're always thinking defense. It's not a wide-open game," Chicago’s Duncan Keith said. "We stuck with it. We learned a lot in that losing streak and brought those lessons to this game. We were able to play a patient game and win it."
Keith kicked off the scoring spree with his equaliser at the 4:52 mark of the third while Dave Bolland added the tie-breaker in the next 10 minutes and Marian Hossa potted the insurance shot at 19:10 to cap off the match.
Chicago is now leading in the Blackhawks-Blues series this season at 2-1 and have three more meetings remaining until the NHL year comes to an end.
Blackhawks have the next at home against a hot Detroit Red Wings team while St. Louis hosts the Boston Bruins on Wednesday.
