Chicago Blackhawks receive David Toews in trade with New York Islanders -NHL Update
Just like when it seemed like Chicago Blackhawks just could not get any better, the team acquired rookie centre player, David Toews, from New York Islanders in a National Hockey League (NHL) offseason trade for future considerations on Friday, September
9, 2011.
David is the younger brother of Chicago’s sensational former third overall pick during round-one of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, Jonathan Toews. The former may still be a rookie himself at the age of 23 and having played only his fourth straight season, he
has certainly established himself as one of the best players in the league.
David Toews, also belonging originally to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, was drafted as the 66th overall pick during round-three of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft after his second season with Shattuck-ST. Mary’s High School in which he put up an impressive
100 points (44 goals, 56 assists) in 51 games.
After his draft, Toews continued his university education and played two seasons straight with University of North Dakota in the West Coast Hockey Association (WCHA). Last season, Toews played 60 matchups with Brandon Wheat Kings in the Western Hockey League
(WHL) and scored 48 points (20 goals, 28 assists).
For now, it is uncertain whether David will be added on to the roster for next season or not, but at the moment, he is a confirmed to be representing Chicago Blackhawks later on this week at the 2011 Toronto Maple Leafs Rookie Tournament, which is to be
held in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada.
Jonathan Toews was also nearly the same age when he joined the major league and could easily help in moulding his younger brother to be able to play with the same momentum and skill. Most likely, the younger Toews will be given a chance during the training
camp to prove his performing abilities and maybe even score an entry-level contract with the major league franchise.
Another scenario could have David in the minor leagues again, playing for Chicago’s affiliate and further improving on his skills. Looking for another Stanley Cup run, Blackhawks hope that David will become another Jonathan in the upcoming seasons.
