Chicago Blackhawks slip as Edmonton Oilers win 4-3 -NHL Update
A suspension for Carcillo might be in the pipeline by the National Hockey League (NHL) but it was enough for Oilers to make a comeback and take the match out of Blackhawks’ hands, 4-3, on Monday night, January 2, 2011, at the sold-out United Center in Chicago, Illinois, United States.
Chicago was doing good for themselves up until the start of the second period as Daniel Carcillo was booked with not only a five minute major, but also given a game misconduct for his vicious hit on Edmonton’s Tom Gilbert.
After Jonathan Toews gave Chicago a 1-0 lead to work on, assisted by Daniel Carcillo, in the first period, Carcillo made a hit on Gilbert from the back which sent him flying onto the glass behind the Edmonton net, which was the turnaround point in the game.
Edmonton countered back with their new found motivation to avenge their teammate through victory as former Los Angeles Kings' forward, Ryan Smyth, and Taylor Hall potted two power play goals, straight, to bring Oilers ahead at the 11:00 mark.
Andrew Brunette tried to kill the Edmonton momentum but failed as Andy Sutton came right back to add another one for Oilers, with less than four minutes remaining in the second.
"Not happy, that's for sure", Chicago's star, Patrick Kane, said. "It's a team we should beat. Giving up two on the 5-minute penalty kill changed the momentum of the game. But we still shouldn't (have) lost to a team like that".
Former Chicago Blackhawks’ player, Ben Eager, made the game-winner, nearly midway through the third and final period of regulation, while Jimmy Hayes got his first of the season with less than four minutes to go, but failed to add anymore as Edmonton took the match.
"That's the way we played at the start of the year", Sutton said. "I don't know what's so complicated about playing that way. Just don't turn the puck over. We were tenacious on the puck and the results speak for themselves".
Edmonton snapped a three-game losing streak and now have some momentum to work on as they face the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday, while Chicago Blackhawks have the next against Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday.
