Chicago Blackhawks snap Colorado Avalanche winning streak 3-1 -NHL Match Update
After a number of crucial victories against tough team in the National Hockey League (NHL) to get off to the best start in the franchise’s history, Colorado’s five game winning streak snapped on Thursday night as the Avalanche lost to Chicago Blackhawks,
3-1, at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado, United States.
The shooting throughout the 60 minute contest remained close as Colorado outshot the home team by 32-30, but Chicago’s Corey Crawford was eyeing a shutout but fell short on one, blocking a total of 31 shots.
"He was strong all game long", Blackhawks coach, Joel Quenneville, said of Crawford. "He was square and all the saves he made, his positioning was so good they didn't look like they were great saves".
Power plays were scarce throughout the matchup as both teams only gave a total of four penalties, and killed off their respective two added man advantages for the opposing team.
"I felt pretty good", Crawford said after the Blackhawks completed a sweep of a two-game road trip to improve to 4-0-1. "We kept them to the outside for the most part. Against a team like that, eventually they're going to get some chances. They have so much
speed and skill, but our third period was really good; we were solid, we didn't give them much".
Chicago captain, Jonathan Toews, scored the opening goal with less than four minutes left to play in round-one.
Ryan O'Byrne levelled on the match for Colorado with his first at the 15:27 mark of the second period, which did not have a single power play opportunity for either team, off an assist from Matt Duchene and Joakim Lindstrom.
The Blackhawks took over in the final period of regulation as Patrick Sharp potted his second goal at the 7:20 mark on the clock while Marian Hossa added his third while Colorado was desperate to score with 1:10 remaining, finalising the match shorthanded
with Brent Seabrook on the bench for tripping with a minor.
After two games on the road, Blackhawks will be returning back to Chicago to host the Colorado Avalanche once more for this month on Saturday, October 22.
