Chicago Blackhawks take out Anaheim Ducks with 3-2 overtime victory
Whenever the Chicago Blackhawks are on the attack, opposing teams need to keep their eyes open. If not, the Hawks’ talented skaters will use their skills to dazzle them, and ultimately
steal away a victory. That’s what happened as the Blackhawks handed the Anaheim Ducks a 3-2 overtime loss on Sunday, 14 November.
How it happened
The home team got the game off to a strong start with a power play goal from Patrick Kane at 3:37 of the first period. However, the visiting Ducks evened the score at 4:34 when Corey Perry’s
snap shot beat Corey Crawford.
Chicago took a 2-1 lead in the second period when sniper Marian Hossa potted a power play goal at 11:24. Kane earned his second point of the game with an assist on Hossa’s backhander,
while Brent Seabrook picked up the other assist.
Anaheim then made it a 2-2 hockey game at 3:36 of the third period. Perry tallied for the second time with a wrist shot, with rookie Cam Fowler earning his sixth assist of the season on
the play. The score would remain tied after regulation play ended, which meant that the game would have to be decided in overtime.
Both teams battled hard in overtime, but the Blackhawks would emerge victorious after Viktor Stalberg beat Jonas Hiller at 4:32 with a wrist shot. Stalberg’s goal was the game winner,
and the Hawks skated off with a close 3-2 victory.
What they’re saying
Stalberg was hailed as a hero of sorts by his team after the game, and the 24-year-old Swede was happy to have helped the defending Stanley Cup champions notch another win, especially
before the team embarks on a six-game road trip.
“It’s a big step forward for us,” Stalberg told reporters after the game. “No matter what, I think we were pretty confident we’d find a way to come away with two points some way tonight.
Now we’re leaving our building for awhile, so hopefully it’ll get our team going and we’ll come back here stronger when we return.”
Hiller’s strong play earned him the praise of Ducks head coach Randy Carlyle, who said that the goalie performed well after suffering a small injury in the team’s last practice session.
He had taken a shot off of his face, which required some stitches afterwards.
“(Saturday) night when I saw him, he looked real good,” Carlyle said of Hiller. “He actually looked a little bit worse tonight than (Saturday) night when I saw him, but he said he was
fine to play. He played very, very well for our hockey club.”
Chigago begins their road trip with a game against the struggling Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday 17 November. Anaheim returns to action against the Dallas Stars on Tuesday 16 November.
