Chicago Blackhawks veteran centre Patrick Sharp out for 3-4 weeks after surgery -NHL News Update
Patrick Sharp, veteran centre player of the National Hockey League’s (NHL) Chicago Blackhawks, underwent an emergency surgery for the removal of his appendix, also known as an appendectomy, Monday night, September 12, 2011.
Sharp was taken in for a check up after feeling pain in his lower abdomen and was rushed in for the surgery, which could have resulted in undesired results if not having come in on time. He is expected to stay out of the pre-season as a minimum recovery
time of 3-4 weeks has been set.
The news was confirmed by Chicago Blackhawks team physician, Dr. Michael Terry, who issued a statement.
"Patrick Sharp underwent an emergent surgical appendectomy this evening after experiencing some abnormal abdominal discomfort", team physician Dr. Michael Terry said in a statement issued by the club. "The surgery was successful and I anticipate a full recovery
in approximately three to four weeks".
The 29-year-old recently signed a five-year extension with his team worth an estimated $29.5 million, with an annual salary cap hit of $5.9 million. Being out for 3-4 weeks at the least quite well mean that he will miss the entire preseason, including the
training camp which is set to kick off later this week.
If all things go according to plan, Sharp could see himself back on the ice for Chicago Blackhawks opening game on October 7, against Dallas Stars in Texas. If not, the franchise could see a small chunk of the seasons without him.
Last season, Patrick Sharp, a native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, potted a career high of 71 points (34 goals, 37 assists) in 74 games played and is certainly a vital part of the Chicago roster. Having him back on time would not only increase their chances
of remaking another 2010 Stanley Cup season like they want to, but also keep them from getting off to a bad start.
Missing the preseason is not as much an issue as is with the regular season. It will be thrilling to see whether Chicago remains as capable without Sharp on their line-up or not once the games begin.
