Chicago Blackhawks win third straight with overtime win over the St. Louis Blues
It was a meeting of teams headed in opposite directions as the Chicago Blackhawks, losers of three of their first four games, won their third in a row, and the St. Louis Blues, winners of their first two,
have now lost three straight – including two straight games in overtime.
How it happened
After a scoreless first period, David Perron got things going for the Blues when he scored his first of the season just before the halfway mark of the second period.
Perron got his second of the game, and second of the season, midway through the third when the Blues came in on a three on one as he was fed a pass from T.J. Oshie to fire past Marty Turco.
Cue the comback by the reigning Stanley Cup champions courtesy of two goals from Marian Hossa, first on the power play at 13:12, and then two and a half minutes later off a scramble in front with a nifty
backhand through the legs of Blues goalie Jaroslav Halak. Hossa's two goals, besides helping his team send the game to overtime, were his league leading sixth and seventh of the season.
Patrick Sharp got the overtime winner for the Blackhawks with just over a minute remaining when Patrick Kane found Sharp wide open at the far post with a beautiful cross-ice pass. The goal was Sharp's
sixth of the season.
What they're saying
Blackhawks head coach, Joel Quenneville, was happy about getting a win against a tough divisional opponent and specifically praised Hossa's hard work.
"(Hossa's) been playing at a great level for us and he was instrumental in getting us back in the game," he said. "It ended up being a huge two points for us."
Hossa, who suffered through injuries to his shoulder and his knee last season, was happy to be feeling healthy and being able to contribute to his team's success as he currently leads the league in scoring.
"I feel healthy, that's the number one thing," he said. "The shoulder is fine and the knee is fine. That's the main thing, because I believe (my) skating and the moving the puck is much better than let's
say in the playoffs, when I was a little limited. I feel great. Pucks are finding me and I'm trying to be available for my teammates."
What it all means
The Blackhawks will look to extend their win streak to four games when they host the Vancouver Canucks on Wednesday 20 October.
The Blues don't play again until Friday 22 October when they will once again play the Blackhawks, this time in Chicago.
