Chicago Blackhawks wins six games in a row snapping Calgary Flames winning streak
Chicago keeps on repeating history as Calgary has not been able to dominate them for eight years now, tying their season meetings at 2-2 as Blackhawks snap Calgary Flames’ winning streak, extending their own now to six at the overcrowded United Center in
Chicago, Illinois, by beating them 6-4.
Every matchup between these two teams is always highly anticipated, one being a great contender and the other being the defending Stanley Cup champions, who have recently woken up from their slumber realising that the playoffs are near.
Calgary is taking multiple road trips and home time simultaneously, this being its second and last game before heading home for another two games which will be followed by another two-day road trip.
Chicago’s captain, Jonathan Toews, took an early lead in the heated match, one of his two tonight, by a spectacular pass from Patrick Sharp.
That small lead didn’t last long when Alex Tanguay was opened up by Jarome Iginla during a power-play advantage, tying it midway through the first.
With less than two minutes remaining, Michael Frolik took control of the puck from Rene Bourque down at the Chicago end, making a breakaway and firing it past Miikka Kiprusoff to take the lead to 2-1 at the sound of the first buzzer.
It got a little personal in the second period when Viktor Stalberg and Mark Giordano were both sent out for 5 minutes due to fighting.
Blackhawks was able to dominate the second 20 minutes, Brian Campbell scoring his 4th of the season during a power-play when Cory Sarich was sent out for hooking.
Toews got his second of the night after deflecting a block attempt by Anton Babchuk, extending the lead even further to 4-1 before entering the final.
Bourque and Iginla got some key goals in for Calgary in the final period, two at the start and Bourque’s second with four minutes remaining to decrease the lead to only one, at 5-4.
If it wasn’t for Dave Bolland scoring another for Chicago, midway through the final period, and Marian Hossa getting the empty netter with under a minute left, the match would have been forced into a Calgary favourite overtime.
Blackhawks moved to 4th place in the Western Conference after this win, with 76 points above Phoenix Coyotes, while Calgary Flames fell to 6th with 75.
