Chicago Bulls agree to a deal with point guard Nate Robinson – NBA Report
With many quality supporting players leaving Chicago Bulls during the summer, the franchise has been looking to re-form its significant bench depth, which has been a key factor in the success seen in the past few seasons.
After a stale start to the free agency, the Bulls acquired Kirk Hinrich, Marco Belinelli and Vladimir Radmanovic and according to several sources, the Bulls have agreed to a deal with point guard Nate Robinson. The details of the agreement and its duration have not emerged yet, but come next Monday, an official announcement is expected.
Robinson is one of the easily recognizable players in the league, mainly due to his small height and Slam Dunk contest fame. Despite standing at just 5 feet 9 inches, he is the only player in NBA history to win the dunk contest on three different occasions. His first dunk contest win came in 2006 and the last two came in 2009 and 2010 respectively.
However the 7 year NBA veteran’s leaping ability is not the only thing the Bulls would have in mind before adding him to their roster. Robinson has been a prolific scorer throughout his career and holds a career average of 11.2 points and 2.8 assists per game. His career best numbers came in the 2008-09 season when he averaged 17.2 points and 4.1 assists per game while playing for the New York Knicks.
The one guard was part of the Golden State Warriors last season, where he played in 51 games and averaged 11.2 points and 4.5 assists per game. In the absence of Stephen Curry, Robinson proved to be an extremely resourceful option for the Warriors, who had injury troubles throughout last season.
The Bulls would expect Robinson to play back up to recently acquired Kirk Hinrich. Both these players have been brought in during the summer in order to add some steel to the point guard position while Derrick Rose recovers from a torn ACL injury which will see him miss at least half of next season.
Robinson is an impact player and his three point shooting will go a long way in filling the void left by the departure of Kyle Korver, who was traded to the Atlanta Hawks.
The only downside of the latest agreement is that the Bulls don’t seem to have enough confidence in their rookie one guard Marquis Teague, and the young player is expected to be on the sidelines more often than not.
