Chicago Bulls hoping to land Taj Gibson on a long term deal – NBA Update
Chicago Bulls have been very quiet this summer, with not many major happenings taking place in the team that finished the last season, and the one before it, with the league’s best record.
The Eastern Conference powerhouses are still taking into consideration whether to match the Houston Rockets on Omer Asik and have been more than willing to let most of their assets in the free agency go. However, as per the latest reports, they are making strong moves toward re-signing Taj Gibson.
The Bulls are looking to materialize a long term deal for Gibson who will become a free agent after next season and is due for a contract extension this summer. He is an brilliant talent, who gives it his all, and will be considered a strong prospect for several other teams if he becomes a free agent next summer. The Bulls management apparently do not want take that chance. They see Gibson fit very well into their future plans and hope to bring him back for a reasonably long duration.
The reserve big was a key part of the Bulls franchise late last year when he made some very useful contributions. He might have averaged only 7.7 points and 5.3 rebounds per game but it’s the work ethic that has earned him high regard from everyone associated with the Bulls.
Along with bringing high energy to the line up, Gibson is also a very good defender and can take on multiple positions in the front court.
The Asik situation however is creating a problem for them. It remains to be seen whether the Bulls try and match the offer for Asik or they bring back Gibson with the possibilities inclining towards the latter option. The Bulls now have to think from a financial point of view as they also have a contract extension due for Luol Deng next year.
They are most likely to keep Noah but may end up using the amnesty clause on Carlos Boozer, who has not been able to put up very impressive performances so far in Chicago.
As far as the current roster is concerned a few of key pieces from last year have already left the organization. John Lucas III has reportedly agreed to a move to the Toronto Raptors, Ronnie Brower has left, while second choice point guard, C.J. Watson is headed to Brooklyn Nets.
