Chicago Cubs' Carlos Marmol achieves another milestone – MLB News
The Chicago Cubs’ Carlos Marmol has a big milestone in his career to celebrate. He became the team’s fourth pitcher to have 100 saves as the Cubs are struggling to go against the tide, remaining at the bottom of the Division table.
Cubs have not won any World Series title for over 90 years now. While they were expected to put up a better show this time, they have – nonetheless, failed in living up to the fans’ expectations.
Be that as it may, if there is one of the players who is doing his bid to keep the team’s morale high, it is Carlos Marmol. He has now become the fourth Cubs pitcher to achieve this milestone, after Bruce Sutter, Randy Myers and Lee Smith.
"It's the one spot where you stand on the mound and you're the only guy who can close the game out," Cubs' manager Dale Sveum said. "Not everybody, as we well know, can get those final three outs of the game. They're the most difficult three outs there are.”
Marmol made this record after winning the Tuesday’s game against the New York Mets, which saw the Cubs overwhelm the Mets 5-3.
Nevertheless, he has a long way to go as other record holders have had more saves. Smith, for instance, holds the record of having 180 saves for the Cubs while Sutter had 133 saves.
The team manager is obviously pleased with this accomplishment of the closer.
"Only certain people can do it and some people have longevity doing it, and they usually go to the Hall of Fame and the rest of them are hit or miss, year to year," Sveum said. "It's a nice accomplishment to have 100 saves."
Marmol’s absence on Wednesday was conspicuous as the Cubs could not hold their nerves, losing the game to the New York Mets by an embarrassing margin of 17-1. The Cubs’ defence literally collapsed as pitcher after pitcher was subject to big hits by the Mets' hitters.
Jeff Samardzija gave up nine runs in 4.1 innings while Casey Coleman allowed 7 runs in his 1.2 inning spell.
