Chicago Cubs' Carlos Marmol following pitching script laid out for him – MLB News
The Chicago Cubs’ closer Carlos Marmol said on Wednesday, June 4, that he is keeping things as simple and planned as chalked out by the pitching coach Chris Bosio. Marmol is trying to be a consistent performer for the Cubs this season as is expected of him.
Even though Marmol was admittedly going through a tough time, especially when he was sent to the disabled list in May, he is striving to remain effective enough on the mound.
Part of the plan laid out by the pitching coach is to follow what the catcher says. Marmol has tried his best to stick to that. So far, as results show, the effort has paid off to a considerable extent. But even then, there is a lot expected that the pitcher is to do.
Regarding following the instruction of the catcher, Carlos Marmol referred to it in his brief talk to the media.
"I do what the catcher says now," he said. "I think it helps a little bit. When I called the pitch, I was thinking too much. When the catcher calls the pitch, it's, 'OK, let's go.' It's a good idea. It's a smart idea from him."
For the pitching coach, the simpler the plan is kept, the better it is not only for Marmol himself, but also the team which requires a thoroughly effective and formidable closer in Marmol. The pitching coach is happy with the consistency of Marmol.
“We're trying to simplify things, and it's working," Bosio said. "Sometimes it's more than a grip or a sign or a sequence. I think it's helped his overall mental approach."
The hamstring injury might have changed a lot of things lately, but it remains a fact that he is genuinely trying to be on the right track again. That effort, it seems, will not go unrewarded.
"I better listen," Marmol said. "It works now, and we're going to keep it the same way."
In the days to come, how Marmol keeps his pace and effectiveness is a question that everyone in the Cubs will patiently and eagerly wait to see.
