Chicago Cubs' Darwin Barney achieves a new milestone – MLB News
Chicago Cubs' second baseman Darwin Barney achieved a new milestone on Thursday, September 27, with his 141st consecutive errorless game as second baseman. This was officially tied with Placido Polanco’s record that he had set in 2007 when he was with the Detroit Tigers.
Previously, he had crossed the 123 games mark which was a record in the National League. That record was first held by Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg. With the 141st errorless game, however, Barney stands distinguished now both in the NL and Major League Baseball.
"They're good mementos, and a sign of the hard work we've done on the defensive side," Barney said, whose team struggled throughout the season, but generally held a good record under the new skipper Dale Sveum.
Among others, Barney also credits the young first baseman Anthony Rizzo who has also fared superbly well throughout the season, making things easier for Barney.
"None of that is on my mind until it happens I guess," Barney said of the streak. "With [first baseman Anthony] Rizzo over there, you feel comfortable making throws no matter what. It's not really on my mind."
Barney, it goes without saying, has a lot of credit to give to the manager Dale Sveum as well. The Cubs who are fighting hard to avoid the 100-loss mark, with a 59-97 record already, Sveum has shown remarkable leadership skills for a relatively young team now which is in the rebuilding phase.
"The communication is there with everybody," Chicago second baseman Darwin Barney said. "If you want a straight answer, he'll give it to you, and if you want to talk about situations in the game and why it happened, he's open door for that.”
Cubs will be playing their next three-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks, starting from Friday. Barney will be looking forward to that game with a new record to be set if he continues the errorless streak.
With the 2012 regular season ending now for the Cubs, there are a lot of things that will give them a reason to be ecstatic; Barney’s record will be one of those.
