Chicago Cubs' Kerry Wood looking to play with the Philadelphia Phillies – MLB News
While the Chicago Cubs may well be considering adding the starting pitcher Paul Maholm in the roster, there are reports that Kerry Wood is weighing the offers made to him by several teams as he, in essence, forms an important component of the club.
While all the teams, who are interested in striking a deal with Wood, are not known, one of the strongest bidders is said to be the Philadelphia Phillies. However, as the reports are trickling in, Wood will make a decision on this by the end of the week.
It is important to recall that only last year did the player say that he will not be moving anywhere if only the team wanted him to be around. However, he did refer to the talks being had about the future prospect of the player; whether to stay or move.
"I'm not going to play anywhere else," Wood had said back then. "This is where I want to be. If they need me back and want me back, I'm sure those conversations will happen in the next couple months. I'm home and this is where we're at."
Only once he had moved to another team which was the Cincinnati Reds when he was a free-agent. It will be interesting to see what kind of affiliation remains with the team at the end once the final decision is made by Wood within the coming week.
"As much as they want me around, I'd love to be a part of the organization," he said. "I'm not saying it's going to be broadcasting, I'm not saying it's going to be radio, I'm not saying I'm coaching, managing, any of that stuff. I'd like to be around and
be a part.”
Wood believes he has a year or two left in him. The 34-year-old closer appeared in 55 games the past season, winning three games and losing five. He maintained an ERA of 3.35 with 57 strike-outs to his credit, having pitched 51 innings and giving up 45 hits,
with a 1.29 WHIP.
It will be interesting to observe how his deal eventually transpires with the Phillies.
