Chicago Cubs' Starlin Castro hopeful of a good future for the club – MLB News
No matter what the end result of the contract extension talks between the shortstop Starlin Castro and his team the Chicago Cubs, apparently both want to go together as the club reinvents itself. The Cubs which have not quite done well for decades now are in a rebuilding phase especially after the changes they underwent at the start of the season.
It had earlier been reported that the Cubs and Castro’s agents, Paul Kinzer, are busy in long-term contract talks and the shortstop had hoped he would be with the team forever. Whether that transpires or not will be clear in the days to come.
Castro is playing his third season with the Chicago Cubs. After the recent overhaul, wherein a big number of regular veterans were traded and the youngsters inducted in the Cubs, has placed Castro in a unique position now.
Among the 11 out of 25 young players who were either promoted or traded to the Cubs, Castro’s seniority – with his three-year experience and the effectiveness, power and instrumentality that he brings are something that the Cubs heavily rely upon.
Part of the reason why – then, the shortstop wants to be with the Cubs is to see it grow in times like this wherein the Cubs are giving their best despite the absence of former players.
Coupled with Anthony Rizzo, Darwin Barney and Luis Valbuena, the three basemen of the Cubs, Castro will help make a stronger offence for the Cubs in times ahead.
That is what he believes in, and is increasingly looking forward to.
"You want to be on a very good team for the future and that's what I want to be," Castro said. "This team is going to be good and win games, [make the] playoffs, that kind of stuff. I want to be there. Everybody like me, Barney, Rizzo, we want those guys together to win games in the future with this team."
The trio consisting Castro, Rizzo and Barney is already giving their best, contributing significantly in the team’s transformation as far as the infield is concerned.
That aspect does not go unnoticed by the team management, especially the president of baseball operations for the Cubs – Theo Epstein.
"You're always hoping for guys to step forward and be considered as core players," said Theo Epstein. "That's what we want. We want all our guys to become indispensable parts of the core that can mature together and become the nucleus of a championship caliber team."
Although the previous few years have not been good enough for the Cubs as far as their performance is concerned, times ahead – the Cubs hope, will be better, signifying hope and optimism for the club.
