Chicago Cubs' batting witnessing slump – MLB News
The Chicago Cubs' manager Dale Sveum acknowledged on Friday, August 24 that the team seems to be struggling as far as the performance on the plate is concerned. The club has witnessed a sharp slump, remaining last in the National League both in runs and on-base percentage.
Cubs have scored a total of 457 runs with a .298 on-base percentage. Not only that, this month the club has had 3.5 runs per game average, something that is disconcerting. The trouble might well have compounded ever since the arrival of youngsters as they have struggled to charge up the offence.
This facet was addressed by Sveum when he spoke to media on Friday.
"[My patience is] intact," Cubs' manager Dale Sveum said. "But I'm not going to lie to you, it gets a little wearing, with some of the non-contested at-bats sometimes. Like I've been talking about the last few days in Milwaukee, the ability to grind when you're in the batter's box.”
Also important to note is the fact that the club has ended up scoring two or less runs in the 10 of last 21 games. For a club that is rebuilding phase, this might be expected, but in the Major League, this may come across as something unsatisfactory.
That the slump has got nothing to do with the young team is what the team manager referred to while expressing his views about it.
He said, "To not just give up an at-bat, because, maybe, the guy made a good pitch and a guys is in scoring position. These are times when you have to grind at-bats to get another pitch. Sometimes that's got nothing to do with being young."
All said, the Cubs hope they will finish the season better than the previous one. As 11 of 26 Cubs players are currently the ones who were not with the team on the Opening Day.
The rebuilding phase, goes without saying, will take its time. It may even try the patience of many, but the Cubs are so far exhibiting their utmost composure. The team that has not won any World Series title for over nine decades is awaiting good times ahead.
