Chicago Cubs' manager happy with team’s resurgent offence – MLB News
The Chicago Cubs' manager Dale Sveum on Friday, August 31, expressed his happiness over the team’s resurgent offence that got them a 12-11 win on Thursday against the Milwaukee Brewers. This was the best performance the Cubs had given this year, rallying twice in the closely fought game.
"Sometimes it takes us a week to get 11 walks," Sveum said. "It was nice to have basically everybody through the lineup grind out at-bats through the whole day. ... Yesterday was a great day, offensively."
The Cubs were equally assertive on Friday when they faced the San Francisco Giants, giving a tough time to the pitchers of the National League West’s leader. Cubs won Friday’s game 6-4, sending out a message that they should not be underestimated under any circumstances.
While the offence was playing its due role, the defence was not for behind, coming down hard on their rival team. Nonetheless, there are a lot of things that the defence has to sceptically reassess and put in order.
Cubs want a strong combination as far as the defence and offence is concerned. That can only be done by working harder as a team.
"That's the human factor that comes in sometimes," Sveum said. "When catchers are really starting to come around and do their job to stick to the game plans and we're getting off track on some of the stuff, it has to be tightened up. We're just giving up way too many runs because of the ad-libbing on the mound."
Currently standing fifth in the National League Central, the Cubs will be looking to have a better finish this season compared to the one last year. With the new management and young players in the line-up, the Cubs are in a rebuilding phase.
The win over the Brewers on Thursday and the victory against the San Francisco Giants – both best teams of their respective Divisions, will give a huge morale boost to the Cubs. It remains to be seen how these recent encouraging results are utilised to embolden the club, making them strong to be reckoned with in the games to come.
