Chicago Cubs Chris Volstad may get a start against the Los Angeles Dodgers this weekend – MLB News
The Chicago Cubs pitcher Chris Volstad may start the weekend game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Chris Volstad, who was in Triple-A Iowa, joined the Cubs on Wednesday, August 1.
The decision has been made after the recent Trade moves made by the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs this week traded Paul Maholm and Ryan Dempster, two of the team’s starters. Since Matt Garza is not fully fit, there is not any real likelihood of his pitching up until next week.
For now, Volstad’s return is a good news for the Cubs who will first serve in the bullpen. If things move well, the Cubs shall use him as a starter.
"I hope we can get out of him what he threw the other day," manager Dale Sveum said on Wednesday. "He sounded really confident about that start, and how he pitched the left-handers inside and went after everybody, and didn't think too much about anything and just dominated the game."
The Cubs will have to figure out which pitcher fills the vacuum after the likes of Maholm and Dempster are gone. The fact that Garza is not likely to pitch until next week also triggers concern, forcing the team to go for some big decisions.
Volstad became the part of the Chicago Cubs in the offseason when the Cubs brought him from Miami Marlins as Carlos Zambrano was traded. Since then, Volstad has tried to secure his place in the team since.
"It was just a matter of attacking, making them swing at my pitch the entire game and keeping going," he said. "It was good. I want to continue off that for sure."
But it is quite evident that he has a lot to do in the days to come. For instance, his season record with the Cubs is 0-for-7 with a 7.94 ERA. That certainly requires the player to sceptically reassess everything so as to put things in order.
His 12 starts with Iowa, nonetheless, has a 3-5 record with 5.17 ERA. It is to be seen yet if Volstad can manage to tap into his potential in coming days.
