Chicago Cubs’ Geovany Soto vows to win games for the club – MLB News
The Chicago Cubs’ catcher Geovany Soto stated on Thursday, February 16 that he wants to remain in shape to get his club some wins. Currently working on a balance diet, the player has shed some 12.5kg in an effort to remain fit and upbeat for the new season.
"Now, I have a better balance [in my diet]," he said. "[Cubs outfielder] Marlon Byrd and I are going to be on the same program and keep the weight off. He looks unbelievable. I just want to stay in shape and get the club some wins."
Chicago Cubs will have the commencement of Spring Training from the 19th of this month, which falls on Sunday. Under the auspices of the new manager, Dale Sveum, it will be an entirely new start for the team.
Soto’s role, as the leading and top most contemporary catcher of the Chicago Cubs, will definitely impact the team’s overall performance. What might be a concern for now is the fact that Soto struggled to prevail during the past season.
He maintained an average of .228 throughout the 2011 season, which arguably, was not very satisfactory for him and the team as a whole. It had, after all, come at a time when only the previous year he received the Rookie of the Year Award for his .285 batting
average, with 23 homers to his credit, not to mention the 86 RBIs that he had.
However, Soto confidently asserts he comes with a mentality to be prepared for a great job as it is a mental game.
"Every year, I come with the same mentality and come prepared and ready to do a great job, but this game is a mental game as well," he said. "Taking stuff too much to heart -- that's a problem, too. You've got to find a nice balance.”
The Chicago Cubs are going to have a new start this season as not only did it go for a reshuffling in the front office, but also the roster. It will be interesting to see how they perform with the new outlook during the 2012 Major League Baseball regular
season.
