The Chicago Cubs’ closer Kerry Wood stated on Wednesday, February 22, that he is all ready to pitch both as reliever and closer if they team wants him to do so. The chances are, so it seems, that he may be brought in as a reliever this season given the experience
and expertise he has.
"Whatever they want me to do," Wood said Wednesday. "I just come in and get guys out, whether it's the seventh inning or eighth inning or fifth inning, whatever they need. I'll go in there and get my guys out and give the ball to the next person."
There are reasons that the Cubs may find themselves in a slightly complicated state. It will be pertinent to recall that one of the dependable setup pitchers for the Cubs was traded early this year to the Cincinnati Reds that has caused a vacuum in the rotation.
The left-handed Sean Marshall was traded to the Reds. This will undeniably prompt the need of bringing in another pitcher to replace the predecessor there. However, as it seems, the likelihood is that Wood is all ready to assume that role.
Where does Carlos Marmol fit in here? Would he be ready to pitch as a closer? That is the question that Kerry Wood seems to have an answer to.
"He doesn't need too many days," Wood said of the closer. "He's pitched just about every day for the last two years. I'm sure that's been about every conversation he's had with everybody else this spring. There will be a time, I'm sure."
Ever since Spring Training has kicked off, there has been presence of the catchers and the pitchers in the camp, signifying the importance the Cubs attach to both aspects of the game this season.
Kerry Wood has remained in possession of a variety of qualities. From the starter to closer, he has excelled almost in all positions. With the career ERA of 3.64 in 436 games, whereby he had 178 starts, Wood has so far managed 86 wins and as a closer, 63
saves throughout his career.
