Chicago Cubs’ Matt Garza looks beyond Cactus League – MLB News
The Chicago Cubs’ starter Matt Garza stated on Sunday, March 11, that he is ready for the next game after he struggled on the mound. Playing against the Los Angeles Dodgers, Garza had given up four runs by the time he concluded his two inning spell.
However, despite the apparent setback he had to face, Garza came up with a statement that showed the player’s forward-looking approach. His improvisation of the fastballs had certain things that he needs to work on harder now.
"It's tough," Garza said. "I've been trying to keep myself on a strict program with just fastballs and changeups. It's tough, especially with hitters going up there ready to hack and looking for fastballs. I got myself in trouble more than anything. That's
what it was."
Garza also admitted that going with fastballs is not easy. "I think it was trying to be too fine in certain spots," he said. "It's tough to go with fastball, change. I don't mind it -- that's what I want to do."
Prior to the commencement of the regular season, the Cubs are giving the likes of Garza a chance to look into effectiveness of their pitching. The pitching coach Chris Bosio has his set of techniques that he wants the pitchers to apply during the game.
Aggression is what he lays emphasis on and Garza seems to follow that. Sunday’s game might have been unexpectedly different, but Garza is ready for any task delegated by the team. If nothing else, there are deliberations over the Opening Day starter which
is scheduled on April 5.
The Cactus League has provided a window into looking at the performances of many players. Not that it is essentially decisive in determining who will play when and where, it is to find out how fit and ready the players are for the bigger tasks ahead.
The Cubs, as can be seen, seem determined to perform well with the changes that they have undergone in the recent past. All of the offseason changes are beginning to show as the team looks to putting in a good performance during Spring Training.
