Chicago Cubs Matt Garza out for a week after cramping in right elbow – MLB News
The Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum said on Friday, July 27, that Matt Garza will not be able to pitch until next week after cramping in his right elbow. The news comes at a time when Trade Deadline of July 31, is around the corner.
Not only that, the starter is also reported have undergone an MRI on his right elbow. However, he is said to be alright despite the cramping.
The team manager said that the Cubs will wait to see what transpires once he recovers by next week. "We'll just wait and see what happens with his throwing program, and [he could start], possibly, maybe late next week," Sveum said.
But as Ryan Dempster remained in sixes and sevens about the eventual trade, which he could veto because of his 10-year MLB career having spent five years with the Cubs, what fate does Garza await regarding his trade is not known either.
The team manager is clear about it. He wants Garza on the mound, instead of seeing him being traded. "I don't expect anybody to be gone until it happens anyways," Sveum said. "I'm not dwelling on that. We have to get him back on the mound."
There are a lot of things to be settled before Monday when the Cubs will start their series against the Pittsburgh Pirates. One of those things remains to be naming of the starter for the game. From Dempster to Garza, the Cubs have got to decide it sooner than later.
All said, the Cubs' manager has reconciled with the fact that trade is something unavoidable for any player.
"It's something that's there and we know it's part of the game," he said. "I don't care who you are, you want to move on to other questions, there's no question about it."
Whatever the end result of the Trade Deadline, the Cubs ought to prepare themselves for the games ahead. There is no doubt that potential departure of two starters will have enormous impact on the team, but the sooner the gap is filled, the better it is for the Cubs.
