Chicago Cubs Matt Garza’s bullpen session goes well – MLB News
The Chicago Cubs starter Matt Garza threw a bullpen session on Monday, July 30, for the first time since July 21. The starter had cramping in his right triceps which resulted in his inability to start any game.
The bullpen session on Monday was something reassuring for Garza considering the fact that the team is considering his name for the weekend’s start against the Los Angeles Dodgers. If all goes well, Garza may well be out there on the mound to start since
the last time he did.
The bullpen session, as the team manager Dale Sveum put, was better than he had imagined. Sveum seemed perfectly satisfied with the session.
"It was better than I imagined," Sveum said. "It was a normal bullpen. He threw all his pitches, [had] velocity, extended himself with his slider and curveball and changeups. It went extremely, extremely well."
Garza’s return has become ever necessary now given the clouds of uncertainty hanging over the Cubs regarding the future of another starter, Ryan Dempster. The Cubs are awaiting the Trade Deadline which is on 31st July to see what eventually transpires.
Whatever happens on that front, the Cubs have their focus on Garza’s bullpen sessions. These sessions will determine the fitness and the ultimate likelihood of his return in the team.
"We'll see how he feels in the morning or tomorrow afternoon," Sveum said. "Hopefully, we can schedule him in three, four, five days."
In his 18 games this season so far, Garza has had 3.91 ERA in 103.2 innings that he has pitched. With 5-7 record, Garza has 96 strikeouts to his credit, allowing 90 hits and 48 runs.
As for Ryan Dempster, the player looks forward to be playing for the Cubs. But things will be clear within 23 or 24 hours.
“Whatever ends up happening in 24 hours or 23 hours from now, we'll find out then. It could be sooner, it could be wearing my uniform and going out and pitching [Tuesday]."
The Chicago Cubs, nevertheless, will be awaiting a favourable end of everything that currently seems thoroughly uncertain. Garza’s return, for now, is a good news.
