Chicago Cubs’ Paul Maholm goes for five-inning game – MLB Update
The Chicago Cubs’ pitcher Paul Maholm had another impressive spell on Wednesday, March 21, against the San Francisco Giants’ Class A Team; making his case for the team’s rotation. Maholm’s recent performance will serve as infallible evidence of the improvement
he has made, qualifying for the enviable place in the bullpen.
Maholm on Wednesday went aggressively against the Giants’ Class A team since the start. He had five innings to pitch, giving up only one run. Maholm allowed only a walk. The only run that came in Class A team’s way was in the second inning.
Paul was happy with his performance coming as it came at a time when the Opening Day game is around the corner. Pitching with such consistency can enable the player to remain on the radar of team manager.
Nonetheless, Wednesday’s pitching spell was welcoming for Maholm.
"It was good," Maholm said. "I'm getting a little better with pitch sequences and everything, but as far as getting ahead of hitters and challenging them, that was the main thing I wanted to do. When I threw first-pitch breaking balls, they were for strikes,
for the most part.”
Maholm, however, did acknowledge that there were pitches that might not have been perfect. The fact that he was able to pitch five testifies he is both mentally and physically prepared to go for bigger games ahead.
“There were some pitches that obviously weren't perfect, but that's part of it. It was a building block and a positive to get through it with five innings. I have two or three more [starts]," Maholm said.
Chicago Cubs has recently found some new energy and power in the bullpen. Maholm, like always, will be a wonderful addition, making it one of the strongest defences in the division.
If the same consistency is maintained, the Cubs will indeed be a tough team to compete with. It will therefore be interesting to see how things proceed once the regular season kicks off. The fitness and the same enthusiasm will be a crucial factor in strengthening
the team into an undefeatable side. The Cubs are looking for some success this year as they have made several changes to their franchise during the offseason.
