Chicago Cubs’ Randy Wells intent upon putting up a good show–MLB News
The Chicago Cubs’ starter Randy Wells on Tuesday, June 19, expressed hope he would be able to make most of the opportunity given to him. The starter was subbed for Ryan Dempster who has been consigned to the disabled list with tightness in his shoulder.
Wells here has got a chance to establish the evidence of his great potential to succeed as a starter. However, the starter has only had two games so far in the season. Wednesday’s game, against the Chicago White Sox, will be his third, which will determine if he can go down well.
While he had invested too much time and energy in this year’s Spring Training, he ended up in Triple –A Iowa. The very fact that he could not somehow become the part of regular team might well have caused discouragement and disappointment.
For Wells, this Spring Training was seen as a harbinger of bigger things to come for him as he thought he had thrown well. However, once the roster was announced, he could barely see his name enlisted.
"Three years in the rotation, or whatever it was, doesn't guarantee you're going to get the fourth," Wells said. "The two years I had in the rotation didn't guarantee anything. I've been through it before. It was definitely a low point in my career to have to go to Triple-A this year out of Spring Training. I felt I was throwing well.”
However, since the game has its fair share of unpredictability even if you get chance, Wells does not want to yield to complete despair. He believes the experience has helped him grow stronger since he knows well there is always a competition for the spot.
"It's definitely an eye-opener but it makes you stronger and you realize there's nothing given to you in this game and there's a guy waiting to take your spot every day."
Nonetheless, the 20th June game, wherein Wells will have his chance to start, will determine how likely it is for him to get more chances in the future. To be a regular fixture, he indeed has to make most of Wednesday game.
