Chicago Cubs Ryan Dempster may consider contract extension offer – MLB News
As speculations run high and wild on the impending Trade Deadline, the Chicago Cubs starter Ryan Dempster said on Thursday, July 26, that weighing up the contract extension possibility is not far-fetched. The free-agent-to-be, Ryan Dempster, will have the future decision on Tuesday, July 31, when he will formally become a free agent.
The quality pitcher – leading the National Leagues with 2.11 ERA, was previously reported to be considering the Atlanta Braves’ offer which is now formally gone. It is now the Los Angeles Dodgers who are said to be interested in trading the 35-year-old starter.
What is important for Ryan Dempster – among other things, is job security. He commented on this while speaking on the matter.
"I think anybody in here is interested in a contract extension," Dempster said. "I think that's true for anybody in whatever job they have. Whatever you're doing, whatever your employment is, I think if somebody wants to offer a contract extension, I think it's something you have to look at."
Dempster also has the right to veto any deal with his 10-year Major League career, five of which has been with the Chicago Cubs. There apparently is no final word on what he is thinking right now: Whether a good offer from the Dodgers or contract extension by the Cubs.
Increasingly clear is the fact that the Cubs will not find it any easy to fill the spot once Dempster leaves. He has been a source of strength for the rotation, making the otherwise vulnerable rotation strong enough to compete against the rivals.
Dempster did, however, sound a bit frustrated on Wednesday when he was pulled out of the game against the Pittsburgh Pirates when the latter had 3-2 lead. But Dempster was quick to dispel that impression.
"It seems like so many times I've pitched against these guys and lost by one run," Dempster said. "And I was more upset I gave up the lead and just wanted a chance to get out there and keep pitching and get a chance to win a ballgame. That's all it was."
Whatever the nature of recent episode, the Cubs and Dempster would certainly want an outcome that benefits the both in the long run.
