Chicago Cubs’ Starlin Castro to work on defence and running bases – MLB News
The Chicago Cubs’ shortstop Starlin Castro stated on Sunday, February 26, that he has been working hard on defence and running bases, as the training sessions are gaining momentum. Castro, it will be pertinent to mention, is being prepared for batting third
in the line-up.
While shortstop remains one of the dynamic defensive positions for any player, Castro has proved his instrumentality there. Now that the Chicago Cubs are gradually overhauling the strategies, Castro will be tried at third base now.
However, Castro, while happy to get a new role in the club, knows the importance of working on the defence and remaining focused.
"My defense," he said. "I've been working hard on my defense and running bases and trying to steal more bases and focus more."
That there are at times throwing errors by Castro is an aspect that the team manager Dale Sveum is currently working upon. He has already identified what the problem actually is.
Dale Sveum shed light on it when asked about it.
"There are certain reasons why he makes throwing errors," Sveum said Sunday. "One is because he picks up his target too late. ... He has a tendency to get a ground ball and look over his shoulder and then it causes his shoulder to turn and then it has to
open up and that's why you see the ball go down or they fly high.”
Not that Dale Sveum alone will oversee the improvement in the player. The Chicago Cubs had already decided to ask Mariano Duncan to work with Castro. With over a decade’s experience on his shoulders, Duncan is in Dominican Republic to help Castro.
Duncan believes Castro has got a great future ahead for himself provided he works the way he is asked. Having a strong arm, the player has all the flavours available to him for success in any position he is asked to play.
Now that the commencement of the season is just around the corner, Castro will have his chance on the field to prove his efficacy as the right player for the potential position.
