Chicago Cubs’ Theo Epstein responds to Ryne Sandberg's call – MLB News
The Chicago Cubs’ president of baseball operations Theo Epstein had a talk with the Hall of Famer second baseman Ryne Sandberg on Thursday, November 3. This came at the aftermath of the Cubs decision to not retain manager Mike Quade anymore.
The Cubs had also decided on Wednesday that they will not make any offer to Hall of Famer Sandberg to lead the team after the dismissal of Mike Quade. Sandberg was considered a strong candidate for it.
But as Theo explained on Wednesday, the team actually wanted someone with Major League Baseball managerial experience. As for Sandberg, he has actually led the Minor League in five seasons so far.
However, Sandberg was full of gratitude after Epstein called him, explaining the reason or him why the team decided not to go for him name. Sandberg called Epstein back, thanking him for the gesture.
Epstein thanked Sandberg for the graciousness he demonstrated by calling him back. Epstein was of the view that given the experience and qualities that Sandberg has, he has a bright future ahead for a big league position.
He also made an explanation of what prompted the Chicago Cubs not to make any offer to Sandberg.
"It was very gracious of him to call me back," Epstein said. "I explained that we created a list of criteria for the next manager, one of the things we wanted was somebody with Major League managerial, coaching experience and that would rule him out."
Epstein also said he wished Sandberg luck.
"I thought he had a great future on a big league staff and as a big league manager someday and wished him luck," Epstein said.
Sandberg believes that with the kind of management that the Chicago Cubs have now got, there is a strong chance that the team will now climb to the expectations of the fans. It has been almost a century since the Cubs won any World Series. Their 2011 regular
season performance was not up to the mark either. It will be interesting to see who the Cubs choose to manage them for the 2012 season.
