Chicago Cubs’ Travis Wood pitches in Cactus League – MLB News
The Chicago Cubs’ starter Travis Wood had the first start of his Cactus League on Friday, March 9, enunciating his arrival on the mound. While there is increasing competition between the players as to who shall get his name slated for starting pitcher’s
spot, Wood sees it as something healthy.
On Friday, Wood gave up a run and three hits in just over two innings that he pitched. The game against the White Sox was to make a test case as to how ready the pitcher is for the season.
While Wood may have needed the help, Randy Wells came in to pitch over two innings to keep the defence smooth. The two may well be competing for the starting pitcher’s spot, nonetheless, Wood, in Wells’ view, is a good pitcher.
"We're all pulling for each other and you don't want to see anybody not have a good game or anything like that," Wells said. "We rode over here together. [Wood's] a good dude and teammate and I was pulling for him, and he was pulling for me.”
This friendliness present in the team will go a long way to help make a tightly-knit team.
“That's the way it is with Chris [Volstad] and Paul [Maholm] and Jeff [Samardzija]. I think that's what good teams are made of. You go out and do what you can do and control what you can control and at the end of camp, whatever happens, happens."
Cubs are entering this season with an entire new approach and outlook. It is the same team that had lost over 90 games the past season, triggering anger and causing disillusionment for many fans. However, with the arrival of prominent names in the club,
especially the front office, things have changed considerably now, as can be seen.
It is all about renewed focus on improving the performance and record, redressing the wrong and putting together a combination that does not give in easily. It will indeed be interesting to see how the Cubs’ introducing big names for the team translates
into success in the times ahead as the season approaches.
