Chicago Cubs aim at raising a solid lineup for the future – MLB News
The Chicago Cubs' president of baseball operations said on Tuesday, October 23, that the club’s focus is to raise a team that can take on challenges. Theo Epstein was visiting Wrigley Field on Tuesday, a few days before the first anniversary of his becoming president of baseball operations for the Cubs.
"You need players who can elevate the baseball and have some pop because there are going to be days when you need home runs to win," he said, "but there will be a lot of days when you need to play good fundamental baseball and have players who can cover a lot of ground in the outfield and not make mistakes."
Chicago Cubs could not quite hold their ground this season and lost more than 100 games. It was a team that had undergone massive transformation with the trade of veterans and the induction of young players.
After dismissing the manager Mike Quade in 2011, the Cubs had brought Dale Sveum. Although the desired results might not have been achieved, the Cubs seem satisfied with how things are going.
Among other things, for Theo Epstein, it is encouraging to see the baseball operations personnel. All these are going to lend a lot of help to the team in raising a competitive team which can take on any and every rival.
"That was a really nice feeling to be down there and see a lot of dedicated Cubs baseball [operations] personnel, some new, some old, all buying into the collective 'Cubs way' of doing things that they helped define, impacting a really talented group of young players," Epstein said.
While the focus is holistic, the club is looking forward to add and strengthen the rotation by bringing in two pitchers. For now it is Jeff Samardzija, Matt Garza and Travis Wood who provide a start to the Cubs in the rotation.
Under the aegis of the Theo Epstein, in the years to come, the Cubs hope they will be a completely transformed club. It will be interesting to see how smooth the whole transformation goes given the challenges confronting the Cubs.
