Chicago Cubs all-set to bid for free agent Prince Fielder – MLB Update
With Prince Fielder the only type-A free agent player left in the free market, the Chicago Cubs have decided to go all-out in a bid to lure the player into their ranks. The Cubs have lost grip in the National League Central division and Fielder’s addition
in the offence will surely help them regain some glory in the future, if not as early as the next season.
The Cubs saw division rivals St. Louis Cardinals rise to glory this past season with a stellar run of form, earning a wild card entry for the playoffs to rattle the stalwarts of Major League Baseball and lift the World Series crown. This has instilled hope
in many teams and thus the spending spree for the acquisition of top-quality free agents at abnormally high prices.
The Los Angeles Dodgers and the Seattle Mariners are the forerunners in this spree, but the Cubs will not want to lose foot among these giants and thus will have to keep sufficient margin in the bid they make for Fielder. The Dodgers are supposedly getting
new owners before the advent of next season and thus the management is willing to spend every dollar for revamping the already competitive roster.
The Dodgers have an excellent rotation with Clayton Kershaw as their ace and some depth in the offence will precisely complete the appetite for a crisp performance next season. The players have already shown their stature of playing under pressure with the
McCourt’s at the helm and thus adjusting with the new ownership should not be a problem for the dugout. Nevertheless, a consistency in policies should be ensured for a smooth running of affairs.
The Mariners, on the contrary, have not been in top form of late and thus feel that the only solution to this situation is to buy out their problem. Spending a hefty amount on Fielder might not be of immediate benefit to the franchise, but will surely yield
the same in the longer run.
Fielder’s camp is looking for a decade-long contract, but it is unlikely that he will get something of that sort. A short-term contract yielding more monetary benefit should do it for Fielder as well.
