Chicago Cubs all set to get Paul Maholm in the roster – MLB News
The Chicago Cubs are reportedly interested in acquiring another left-handed pitcher to the roster to add more depth to their rotation. This time it is Paul Maholm with whom the Cubs are busy striking a deal.
This comes at a time when the Chicago Cubs have already infused the roster with vitality and vigour with the addition of accomplished pitchers. With Ryan Dempster and Matt Garza available to the Cubs, the deal with the Pittsburgh Pirates’ Maholm, who is
29-years-old, will be a sizeable morale-booster.
In the roster are already the likes of Chris Volstad, Travis Wood and Randy Well, substantiating the fact that the Cubs will be a tough rival to take in the upcoming season. Although their last year’s performance was far from satisfactory, owing to defeats
they suffered, this season may turn the tide for the club.
The team’s general manager, while speaking to reporters on Friday, had stated that the Cubs were not done with acquiring new pitchers, as the focus was gathering in many quality players for the Chicago Cubs.
"We're not finished acquiring starting pitchers," Cubs’ general manager Jed Hoyer said Friday. "We want to have as much depth as possible. At this point, we're still very much in the process of gathering as many quality arms as we can, and we'll put those
pieces in place as we get closer to Spring Training."
Appearing in 26 games during the past season, the player had an ERA of 3.66 with 97 strike-outs to his credit, having had six wins and 14 loses with a .262 BAA, allowing 160 hits and 72 runs in the 162.1 innings that he pitched for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
His overall career ERA currently stands at 4.36 in the total of 185 games that he has played. Interestingly, he has started in all the games with 1143.2 innings pitched, allowing 600 runs and 1247 hits with 705 strike-outs to his credit.
It is only a matter of time before it is seen how this player is able to contribute and take on the rival teams while representing the Chicago Cubs.
