Chicago Cubs and Carlos Marmol looking to reach deal soon – MLB News
The Chicago Cubs’ general manager Jim Hendry is looking to reach deal with pitcher Carlos Marmol within the next few days. The Cubs want to add to their pitching depth with the addition of Marmol. Reports are that both parties are very close to reaching
a deal.
Carlos’ agent Barry Praver is reported to be working hard to finalise a deal between the Cubs and the pitcher. The Cubs will be looking to sign the pitcher as soon as possible, as Spring Training is starting and the team will want to focus on the session
before the regular season begins.
It looks like Carlos is asking for $5.65 million but the Cubs are offering $4.11 million. This figure is well below what Carlos is asking for.
"We've done a lot of deals with Barry Praver," Hendry said. "We've been working on avenues of a multiyear deal or a one-year deal. I certainly don't have any anticipation that something won't be done before the arbitration hearing date which is Tuesday."
Marmol has a decent record he had 38 saves and an ERA of 2.55 during the last season.
"We expect to have something done by Monday." Praver said to the sources when he left the Chicago Cubs complex on Sunday.
Many experts feel that Carlos will get a three year deal to keep him with the Cubs until 2013, which would include a contract worth around $22-25 million. Although in arbitration of 2010, Marmol earned $2.25 million and this year it looks as if he wants
to double this figure. The Cubs realise the talent in the pitcher as he set a Cubs’ record last season with 138 strike-outs, 38 saves and an ERA of 2.55. His career average includes an ERA of 3.25 and an impressive 500 strike-outs with 61 brilliant saves.
The Cubs will be looking to sign a deal with Marmol soon, as Spring Training is starting and it is imperative that the pitcher gets into some bullpen sessions for the team to prepare for the upcoming regular season. The Cubs are desperate for a successful
regular season and are hoping that Marmol can provide some impetus to help the team get into post-season play.
It will be interesting to see what the Cubs offer Marmol as he is a very important part of the pitching rotation for the team. The Cubs will be hoping Marmol signs an agreement soon as the team wants to concentrate on Spring Training and get some much needed
game time against some of the top tier teams in the League. Only time will tell if Marmol signs an agreement with the Cubs, as most experts are expecting that he will sign soon.
