Chicago Cubs and Seattle Mariners carefully play their cards – MLB News
When the Winter Meetings officially kick off next week, one of the top most agendas will surely be the fate of the game’s two most resourceful players: Prince Fielder of the Milwaukee Brewers and Albert Pujols of the St. Louis Cardinals.
While both are currently free-agents and the market remains soft on them, Pujols’ name had reportedly been taken into consideration by big teams, including the Chicago Cubs. Nonetheless, since the Cubs are known to have always played their cards carefully
and with relative secrecy, it is unknown what the end result of it will be.
All the same, the Cubs have delegated the power to the president of their baseball operations, Theo Epstein, to decide whatever is good for the team. The competition-oriented game and the equally competitive market here will also put Epstein’s decision-making
skills to the test.
While the Chicago Cubs’ chairman Tom Ricketts had already stated last week that Epstein will be responsible for making decisions on free-agents, Epstein too has kept his characteristic calm in naming who he actually wants to sign for the team.
Ricketts, on the other hand, had said, "Like I've always said, there is one person responsible for making decisions, and one person accountable for those results," Cubs’ chairman Tom Ricketts said. "So if he believes strongly that's what's in the best interests
of the team, then he's got my support."
The general manager of the Seattle Mariners has his own version when asked about signing either of the two players.
"There's no question we could use a big bat in the middle of our lineup, but where is your limitation and threshold?" Zduriencik said.
With the competition seemingly seeing its peak these days as to who will sign which player, every club will definitely try to add someone in the roster who becomes the source of strength for the team once the next season kicks off. It will be interesting
to see which team signs either Albert Pujols or Prince Fielder as they will definitely command massive salaries for their talented services.
