Chicago Cubs appear ready for Ryan Dempster’s trade – MLB News
The Chicago Cubs' manager Dale Sveum on Friday, July 20, hinted at the potential deal regarding Ryan Dempster, the team’s ace starter. As the Trade Deadline nears for Dempster, the Cubs are weighing their options carefully, waiting for bids.
Sveum also alluded to the fact that the deal could materialise at any moment. This essentially means that the starter will be part of some other line-up within this month, or at the start of August.
"It's that time of year," Sveum said Friday. "That's why I kept my phone on high volume today. Obviously, you never know what could happen like that. One phone call changes the whole scenario. It can happen quick. It can happen with more than one guy."
All said, it is not clear yet which teams are interested in Dempster whose recent performance has remained quite impressive. There were initially some rumours that Los Angeles Dodgers are interested in the deal, but that seems to be a wild conjecture given the Dodgers’ preferences for getting players to bolster the offence.
As for what Dempster’s possible departure might mean for the Cubs, it is evident that it will have a huge impact on the outlook of the team. With 1.86 ERA, having had a record of 5-3 this season, he is a sought-after pitcher.
The Chicago Cubs' manager is well aware of the constraints the team has and the supposed lack of choices when such deadlines approach.
"You have to prepare for stuff like this," Sveum said about the imminent deal on Dempster. "It's never a perfect world because you never know that day or that hour when it's going to happen."
But the Cubs will not sit back and let the defence have some vacuum in the absence of Dempster. The team has already started looking for a new starter as the team manager referred to it.
"Whether it pans out or not, the more starts for us, the better," Sveum said.
What eventually transpires is a matter of guess-work here. However, the Cubs will definitely try to move beyond it sooner than later as they focus on having a better second-half of the season.
