Chicago Cubs beat Houston Astros 3-0 to sweep series – MLB News
The Chicago Cubs’ on Sunday, July 1, beat the Houston Astros 3-0 to sweep the three-game series. At Chicago, Travis Wood came forth as another potentially accomplished Cubs' starter to pitch scoreless eight innings to guide the team’s victory.
If there was anything left for the Chicago Cubs, it was the offence which had to make most of the commanding game the starter made. In just over seven innings that he pitched, Wood only allowed three hits to strengthen the team’s defensive position.
What is important to remember here is that Wood has allowed only one run in over 20 innings that he has so far pitched in his last three appearances.
This brought elation for the team as well as the manager who seemed satisfied with the starter’s marvellous performance.
"That was another pretty dominating outing. It was impressive how he kept the ball inside as well as making all of his pitches. He stuck to a game plan and it was perfect. He didn't walk anybody there wasn't a lot of hard contact to tell you the truth," Sveum said. "That was about as good as it gets even though he one of those last time, too."
With Wood who dominated the defence, rendering the hitters almost ineffective, Anthony Rizzo finally scored the first run for the Cubs in the sixth inning with his single to right. The right-fielder Jeff Baker did the remaining with his double to deep-left to triple the lead for the Cubs.
Cubs punished Wandy Rodriguez who allowed three runs in his seven-inning spell. He was not pleased with the performance: "One mistake to the pitcher. He's leading off and I think he's going to take one strike and I threw a fastball and he hit it for a double," the Houston Astros starter Rodriguez said while commenting on how he looked at the end result of the game.
Shawn Camp and Carlos Marmol of the Cubs came as reliever and closer subsequently to finish the game with 3-0 win and sweeping the three-game series for the Chicago Cubs with majestic style.
