Chicago Cubs beat the Atlanta Braves 3-2 – MLB Update
Randy Wells successfully pitched into the seventh inning on Wednesday, August 24 to help the Chicago Cubs beat the Atlanta Braves 3-2 at Wrigley Field.
The rookie who was undergoing difficult times owing to his injury outperformed his rivals throughout the game.
Assisted by Alfonso Soriano who homered to take up the Cubs’ lead, Randy went for six strike-outs, allowing barely a run in over 6 innings that completely changed the tide of the game.
Remaining confined to the disabled list for a while, Randy’s magical spell was good news for him. "I'm starting to feel a lot better," Wells said. "I'm starting to command the fastball a lot better. Tonight, I had a pretty good changeup."
Add to it the homer Soriano came up with, keeping the lead up for the Chicago Cubs. "It felt good," Soriano said about his long home run. "That's all we needed for runs because (Wells) threw a very good game tonight."
The Cubs’ starter kept piling up pressure on the Atlanta Braves’ offence since the start. With the commencement of the game, Randy Wells threw some unplayable fastballs, making it difficult for the Braves to open their account.
His performance won the laurel of the team manager. "Randy was good, obviously," Cubs’ manager Mike Quade said. "Just a real good performance on the back of a game he threw pretty well."
Derek Lowe also came up with an equally strong spell. As the first innings went scoreless, Randy Wells had a second inning a shutout as well. But as the bottom of the second kicked off, the Atlanta Braves had a surprise awaiting them.
The runs came with a rather fast pace, putting Derek Lowe in a rather complex position. Alfonso Soriano homered to take up the lead to 2-0 for the Chicago Cubs. No sooner had Lowe sent Geovany Soto home that Randy Wells himself came up with a hit.
His hit took up the lead to 3-0 while the Braves struggled to find an opportunity to score. Randy Wells pitched into the seventh whereby the lead favoured the Chicago Cubs. It was in the seventh that Chipper Jones scored the first run for the Braves.
Jones homered to bring the lead down to 3-1 while Marshall relieved Wells to pitch the remaining half of the seventh. Alex Gonzalez homered in the eighth to bring the Cubs lead down to 3-2.
However, with the start of the ninth, the Cubs closer Carlos Marmol tossed pitches that even the likes of Uggla could not comfortably play. Marmol concluded the game with a 3-2 victory for the Cubs, winning the first of four-game series where the Braves
have a 2-1 lead now.
